Why Add Page Numbers to a PDF?
Page numbers are essential for any multi-page document that will be read, reviewed, referenced, or printed. Without them, navigating a 50-page report is frustrating — "the section on marketing strategy" means nothing without a page reference. Page numbers enable precise citations, easy navigation, and professional document presentation.
Many PDFs generated from web pages, merged files, or converted documents don't include page numbers. Adding them takes 30 seconds with our tool.

Numbering Format Options
- Arabic numerals: 1, 2, 3, 4 — universal default for most documents
- Roman numerals (lowercase): i, ii, iii, iv — traditionally used for front matter (preface, table of contents)
- Roman numerals (uppercase): I, II, III — formal documents, appendices
- Alphabetical: a, b, c or A, B, C — exhibit labels in legal documents
- Page X of Y format: "Page 3 of 47" — best for long documents where total page count is helpful
Professional Practice: In books and formal reports, front matter pages (cover, table of contents) use Roman numerals (i, ii, iii) while the main body uses Arabic (1, 2, 3). Set your starting number to match this convention.
Starting Number & Skipping Pages
Starting number: If your document has 2 cover pages that shouldn't be numbered, set page numbering to start on page 3, beginning at "1" — so the third physical page shows "1".
Skipping pages: Common pages to exclude from numbering: cover page, copyright page, dedication, blank pages. Enter these page numbers in the "Skip pages" field and they'll receive no visible number while the counting continues normally.

Add Page Numbers NowFont & Style Customization
Choose from standard fonts (Helvetica, Times New Roman, Courier) for professional documents, or opt for a clean sans-serif modern font. Font size 10–11pt at 80% black (not full black) is the professional standard — visible but not competing with the document content. For reports with colored headers, match the page number color to your brand color for a polished look.
